A good gang sheet is not the one that merely looks full. It is the one that produces the most usable transfers for the film area you buy. By the end, you will be able to size, arrange, and check a sheet before submitting it.
A DTF gang sheet is one film sheet holding multiple transfer designs. Lay it out by setting every design to its final print size, keeping a cutting gap between pieces, filling the fixed web width first, then rotating, nesting, and mixing smaller sizes into leftover spaces. Judge efficiency by usable prints per sheet, not empty-looking space.
What a DTF gang sheet actually is

The reason to combine designs is the pricing model. DTF gang sheets are priced by film area, not by the number of designs or colours. The width decision that can double your cost per print
Cost per usable print is driven by a simple relationship: sheet area divided by the number of prints that fit. A 22×30-inch sheet contains 660 square inches. If four prints fit, each print carries 165 square inches of purchased film. If only two fit, each carries 330 square inches.
Using an approximate square-grid layout with a 0.25-inch unprinted margin at every edge and a 0.25-inch gap between designs, four 10×10-inch prints fit on a 22×30-inch sheet. That gives 660 ÷ 4 = 165 square inches of sheet per usable print.
Under the same approximate assumptions, only two 11×11-inch prints fit. That gives 660 ÷ 2 = 330 square inches per usable print, exactly 2.00 times as much as the 10×10 print, even though the design is only 10 percent wider.
The mechanism is the fixed 22-inch web width. Two 10-inch designs need 0.25 + 10 + 0.25 + 10 + 0.25 = 20.75 inches, so the second column fits. Two 11-inch designs need 22.75 inches, so that column disappears. Real layouts vary with design shape, but a small width increase can create a large cost jump.
This is the non-obvious part: reducing a design slightly can be worth much more than the percentage reduction suggests. Before shrinking it, confirm that the smaller print still looks right on the garment. A cheaper layout is not useful if the finished shirt looks undersized.
Read the size ladder from the garment backward
Do not begin with the largest artwork file and guess how wide it should print. Start with the garment category, choose the corresponding catalog size, and then set the artwork to that final physical dimension. The table is a planning reference, not a promise that every artwork silhouette will pack identically. A square back print, a tall chest design, and an arched wordmark can have the same bounding-box area but leave very different usable spaces around them.
For two specific sizes, the 22×60 sheet is 20 percent cheaper per print
This is the second thing most layout guides miss, and it only applies to two sizes. For most print sizes, the long sheet and the short sheet cost exactly the same per usable transfer. For 10×10 and 11×11, they do not.

The cause is the leftover strip at the end of the sheet. A 22×30 sheet has about 29.5 inches of usable length. Two rows of 10-inch designs plus the gap between them occupy 20.25 inches, so roughly 9.25 inches of length is stranded: too short for a third row, and paid for anyway.
A 22×60 sheet has about 59.5 inches of usable length and takes five rows, occupying 51 inches and stranding about 8.5 inches. The wasted strip is nearly the same in absolute terms, but it is spread across twice as much film, so each print absorbs less of it. Sizes that already divide cleanly into both lengths, like 7×7 and 9×9, show no difference at all.
The practical rule: if you are printing Adult M/L or Adult XL in quantity, price the long sheet before defaulting to the short one. For most other sizes, choose the sheet that matches your order quantity and ignore the length question.
Fill the dead space instead of accepting it
Mix sizes around the large designs
Large designs should normally go onto the sheet first because they create the hardest constraints. Once their positions are stable, use smaller customer-ready artwork to backfill the remaining strips and corners. Pocket prints, garment labels, sleeve graphics, and smaller size variants can turn space that cannot hold another large print into productive film.

Rotate and nest by silhouette
Rotate tall or wide designs when orientation does not matter to the printed transfer. Non-square artwork may fit across the web in one direction but not the other. Irregular silhouettes can also nest, such as placing a narrow design beside the tapered portion of another design, provided their transparent bounding areas do not force unnecessary separation.
Inspect the artwork boundaries, not just the visible ink. A transparent canvas that is much larger than the design can make the builder treat empty pixels as occupied space. Crop excess transparent area before layout while preserving enough separation to cut each transfer safely.
Why every design needs a gap
A gap gives you a clear cutting lane. If designs touch, cutting one transfer can nick the neighbouring print, leave an awkward shared edge, or make it difficult to separate the carrier film cleanly. Touching artwork also makes accidental overlap harder to notice in a crowded preview.

Prepare the art before arranging it
Set each design to its intended physical print size before importing it. Enlarging a small raster image in the builder does not create missing detail. Inspect the final-size artwork closely for soft edges, compression blocks, stray pixels, and thin details that disappear against transparency.
Use a transparent background so the intended design, rather than a white rectangle, is printed. PNG is a common format for transparent raster artwork, while JPEG does not preserve transparency. Remove hidden layers, guides, crop marks, and artwork you do not own the rights to use. Check light-coloured elements against both dark and light preview backgrounds. White artwork can appear missing on a white canvas even though it is still present.
How to lay out a gang sheet
- Count the garments. Record how many transfers are required for each garment category, plus only the extras you deliberately want.
- Assign final sizes. Use the catalog ladder instead of applying one adult size to every garment.
- Clean the files. Crop surplus transparent canvas, confirm transparency, and inspect every design at its final print dimensions.
- Place the largest designs first. Test both orientations and watch the 22-inch width, since losing a column can change the economics of the entire sheet.
- Protect cutting lanes. Keep visible separation between every transfer and within the sheet edges.
- Backfill intentionally. Add required pocket, sleeve, youth, infant, or label designs to spaces that cannot hold another large transfer.
- Audit the quantities. Count each size on the completed sheet. Similar-looking adult variants are easy to confuse.
- Calculate efficiency. Divide purchased sheet area by the usable print count, then compare plausible layouts rather than judging by appearance alone.
- Review at full size. Check clipping, overlap, backgrounds, softness, orientation, and cutting access before you submit the sheet.
What goes wrong, and how to fix it
The layout loses an entire column
Cause: A design crosses a width threshold after margins and gaps are included. Fix: Test whether the garment can appropriately use the next smaller catalog size, rotate non-square artwork, or fill the unusable strip with required smaller transfers instead of stretching the large design.
The sheet looks packed, but transfers are hard to cut apart
Cause: Designs were pushed together to remove every visible gap. Fix: Restore clear cutting lanes and inspect narrow corners. Film that appears “saved” is not a saving if separating one print damages the next one.
A background rectangle prints with the artwork
Cause: The file was exported with a solid background, or transparency was flattened into a format that cannot preserve it. Fix: Remove the background in the source file, export to an accepted transparency-capable format, and verify the preview on a contrasting background.
The print is blurry even though the preview size is correct
Cause: A small raster file was enlarged to the desired physical dimensions. Fix: Return to the original artwork, export it at the intended print size with adequate detail, and inspect edges at final size before rebuilding the sheet.
The quantities do not match the garment order
Cause: Similar designs or adult sizes were duplicated visually without a count. Fix: Reconcile the finished layout against a written size list. Label file names clearly before upload, and count the actual instances on the sheet rather than trusting memory.
