DTF Shirt Printing for Cotton, Polyester, and Blends

Shirts are what most DTF ends up on, and the fabric mix in a typical order is exactly why people pick DTF over the alternatives. One film covers cotton, polyester, and everything in between.

A school order with cotton tees, poly performance shirts, and a few blended hoodies is three different jobs for most decorating methods. With DTF it is one film and one press profile, with a small adjustment on the synthetics.

We supply the transfers, you supply the shirts and the press. If you want designs already drawn and ready to go, the ready to press catalog covers common themes without any design work.

Pressing Onto Different Shirt Fabrics

Cotton is the easy case. Press at 280 to 300°F, medium pressure of about 6 KG, and follow the peel type your film calls for. Pre-press the shirt for a few seconds first to drive off moisture and flatten the surface, which matters more than most people expect.

Polyester and heat-sensitive synthetics need the low end of that range and a shorter dwell. Heat is what causes scorching and dye migration, where dye from the garment lifts into the print and tints it. Test one shirt from the actual batch before committing the run, since polyester varies between mills.

Placement and Sizing on a Shirt

Our catalog sizes are sold against garments for a reason. 9 by 9 suits adult small, 10 by 10 adult medium and large, 11 by 11 adult XL, and on up to 14 by 14 for adult 4XL. Youth is 8 by 8 and toddler 2T to 3T is 7 by 7.

For a standard front print, a common starting point is the design centred with its top edge a few inches below the collar seam, then adjusted by garment size. Measure on a real shirt in each size rather than scaling one number, because the drop that looks right on a small looks high on a 2XL.

Small Runs and Size Mixes

There is no minimum order and no setup charge, so a run of six shirts across four sizes is a normal order rather than an awkward one. Because pricing is by film area, a mixed run of different designs costs the same as the same design repeated.

That suits teams, events, staff uniforms, and merchandise tests where you do not yet know what will sell. Print a small batch, see what moves, then reorder rather than committing to a case of one design up front.

Same-day cutoff

Frequently asked questions

What temperature for a polyester shirt?

Stay at the low end of 280 to 300°F and shorten the dwell, then test a single shirt from the actual batch. Polyester varies between mills, and dye migration shows up as a tint in the print rather than as an obvious defect at press time.

Should I pre-press the shirt?

Yes. A few seconds under the platen drives off moisture and flattens seams and creases. Trapped moisture is a common cause of poor adhesion that gets blamed on the film.

What size print for an adult shirt?

9 by 9 inches for adult small, 10 by 10 for medium and large, 11 by 11 for XL, 12 by 12 for 2XL, 13 by 13 for 3XL, and 14 by 14 for 4XL. Youth is 8 by 8.

Can I press DTF on a hoodie or a tote bag?

Yes, both, as long as the fabric tolerates the temperature and you can get even pressure. Watch for seams, zips, and pockets creating high and low spots under the platen, which is the usual cause of partial adhesion.
