A DTF print is artwork printed onto a film carrier with a powdered adhesive backing, cured, then heat pressed onto fabric. The print ends up in the garment surface rather than sitting on top of it like a vinyl cut.
The reason people move to DTF is usually one of two things. Either they want full colour without paying per colour, or they want to print on a fabric that other methods struggle with. DTF handles cotton, polyester, blends, and a fair range of synthetics from the same film.
If you already know what you want, the fastest routes in are single prints by size or the gang sheet builder for several designs at once.
The printer lays down colour and a white underbase onto PET film. Adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink, the sheet is cured so the powder melts into the ink layer, and the result is a finished transfer that can sit on a shelf until you press it.
The white underbase is the part that makes DTF work on dark garments. It is printed underneath the colour, so a mid-tone stays a mid-tone on black fabric rather than going muddy. Methods without an underbase lose colour on anything but white.
There is a hand to a DTF print. You can feel it, particularly on a large solid area. It is thinner and more flexible than heat transfer vinyl and thicker than a screen-printed water-based ink or a direct-to-garment print that has soaked into the fibres.
For most apparel buyers that is a fair trade for full colour on any fabric. If an almost undetectable hand is what your customer is paying for, direct-to-garment on cotton or a discharge screen print will beat DTF on feel, and it is worth being straight about that.
Very large solid coverage across a whole shirt front is where the hand becomes noticeable. High volume of a single simple design is where screen printing wins on unit cost once the setup is spread. Hard non-porous surfaces need UV DTF instead, which is a different product entirely.
Stitched-look work belongs to embroidery, and all-over polyester graphics belong to sublimation. DTF is unusually flexible, but flexible is not the same as always best, and picking the right method beats forcing the familiar one.

Pressed correctly and washed with reasonable care, a DTF print outlasts normal garment use. Wash inside out, cold, and skip the tumble dryer where you can. Most early failures trace back to under-pressing rather than to the film.
Cracking usually means the press was too cool, too brief, or too light on pressure, so the adhesive never fully bonded. Confirm your platen is actually reaching 280 to 300°F, since a dial reading is not the same as a measured surface temperature.
